  • Malaysia targets an 11.6% reduction in energy demand by 2035.

PETALING JAYA, September 10 — Malaysia plans to deploy about nine gigawatts of gas-fired power capacity by 2032 as electricity demand continues to rise.

Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said Tuesday. He said population growth, data centres and hotter weather were increasing pressure on the electricity system.

Malaysia expects its final coal-fired power plant to retire in 2044 as the country transitions towards a lower-carbon energy mix. Akmal said future planning must combine additional generation.

With grid modernisation and greater energy efficiency. Under the National Energy Efficiency Action Plan 2.0, Malaysia aims to reduce energy demand by 11.6% against business-as-usual levels by 2035.
