KUALA LUMPUR, September 11 — Umno leaders have called for stronger internal unity and grassroots machinery as the party prepares for the next general election, while reaffirming its centrist political position.
President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi warned members against becoming complacent after Barisan Nasional’s recent state election victories.
Deputy president Mohamad Hasan acknowledged Umno still faced difficulties convincing Malay voters to accept its cooperation with DAP in the unity government.
He said Umno would remain a moderate, centrist party and continue under Barisan Nasional without forming a new alliance.
However, the party remains open to strategic cooperation with other Malay parties while strengthening its own support base.
