KUALA LUMPUR, September 12 — Umno wants Malaysia to reintroduce the Goods and Services Tax at a more reasonable rate if Barisan Nasional returns to lead the federal government, party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.

Speaking at the Umno General Assembly, Zahid rejected proposals for a hybrid system combining GST with the existing Sales and Service Tax.

He said a restructured GST could simplify business operations, strengthen social protection and support more balanced regional economic development.

GST was introduced at 6% in 2015 before being zero-rated in 2018 and replaced by SST. The proposal forms part of Umno’s eight-point “Malaysia Blue Agenda.”
