KUALA LUMPUR, September 16 — TNB has clarified that the Automatic Fuel Adjustment (AFA) is not a new electricity charge following public concerns over higher bills.
Introduced in July 2025, AFA can provide either rebates or surcharges depending on fuel costs and foreign exchange rates. Households using 600kWh or less monthly are exempt.
September’s AFA rate is a 3.67 sen/kWh surcharge. TNB said customers received RM3.1 billion in AFA rebates since its introduction, compared with RM800 million in surcharges.
It advised consumers to monitor usage, improve energy efficiency and consider Time of Use tariffs.
