PUTRAJAYA, September 17 — Malaysia will expand electricity bill protection to households consuming up to 800kWh monthly, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced Thursday.

The temporary measure, increased from the previous 600kWh threshold, applies to electricity usage from September through Dec 31. Households within the new limit will be exempt.

From the Automatic Fuel Adjustment, Retail Charge and Sales and Service Tax. Anwar said the move followed higher household electricity consumption during recent hotter weather and haze conditions.

The government will continue monitoring fuel costs and energy market conditions while balancing affordability, electricity security and the sustainability of the energy sector.
