GEORGE TOWN, October 25 — The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has ordered construction to stop at a condominium and road development project near a landslide that killed a 73-year-old man in Paya Terubong.

Mayor Rajendran Anthony said the developer must carry out immediate safety measures and submit a fresh environmental impact study.

The landslide struck the rear of a house in Taman Seri Rambai on Sunday morning, while the victim’s wife and son escaped.

Six nearby households were ordered to evacuate as a precaution, while authorities investigate whether construction activities contributed to the landslide.

Paya Terubong assemblyman Wong Hon Wai said it was too early to determine whether the nearby development had caused the incident.

Authorities are assessing slope stability and potential risks to surrounding homes as continuous rainfall raises concerns about further landslides.
