KUALA LUMPUR, October 27 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is expected to test a new Cell Broadcast System on Nov 19.
Potentially triggering emergency alarms on mobile phones in selected areas. The pilot exercise will focus on flood-prone locations in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Kelantan and Pahang.
With simulated disaster warnings sent to compatible devices. Unlike traditional SMS, the system broadcasts alerts directly through mobile towers without requiring phone numbers, mobile data or additional applications.
The initiative aims to improve emergency communication during floods and other disasters, although alerts will depend on functioning telecommunications infrastructure.
