GEORGE TOWN, September 28 — Penang has stepped up rabies preparedness following a reported case in neighbouring Kedah, state Health executive councillor Daniel Gooi said.
Gooi said the Penang Health Department and Veterinary Services Department were coordinating preventive measures because of the proximity between both states.
State health officials said hospitals have been alerted and are prepared to provide treatment if required.
People bitten by a suspected rabid animal should immediately wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water before seeking hospital treatment. Doctors will assess the injury and determine whether post-exposure rabies vaccination is required.
