GEORGE TOWN, Jun 13 – A thirty-year-old Uber driver was charged at the magistrate’s court here this afternoon over allegedly outraging the modesty of a Vietnamese woman passenger. Muhammad Sukri Ramli, 30, a hotel supervisor in Tanjung Bungah, pleaded not guilty to using violence to outrage modesty of Tran Thi Thu Thuan ,43, in his car at 3.56pm in Paya Terubong last Tuesday.

The unrepresented Muhammad Sukri was charged under Section 354 of the Penal Code that carries a jail term of up to 10 years, a fine, whipping, or any two combinations upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Izzah Shahruddin then proposed for RM10,000 bail and that he has to stay away from the victim considering that he knew her home address. Sukri then requested for a lower bail, citing he is just a supervisor at a hotel and has to take care of his wife and only child.

He also said that he is currently in debt and paying them through the Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency. Magistrate Catherine Nicholes then allowed him bail at RM6,000 with one surety. Therefore, Muhammad Sukri was also ordered to report to the Sungai Nibong police station every Monday until the trial of the case ends. The case was set for mention on July 18. — PN
