GEORGE TOWN, January 23 – Wong Hon Wai, Penang’s State EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy, announces a remarkable revival in the region’s cruise tourism post-pandemic. Surging to a record-breaking recovery, Penang welcomed 573,178 international passengers in 2023, marking an impressive 30.56% increase from 2022 and surpassing 2019 figures by 39.82%. This resurgence not only signifies a return to pre-pandemic levels but also outshines Penang’s previous cruise tourism performance.

The Penang Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal experienced substantial growth, hosting 156 international ships in 2023, an 85.71% increase from the previous year. The terminal’s strategic expansion, capable of hosting 12,000 passengers simultaneously and accommodating two ultra-large ships concurrently, positions Penang as a premier cruise destination with world-class facilities. This development underscores Penang’s commitment to providing an exceptional experience for cruise operators and passengers alike.

In 2023, the top ten nationalities of cruise passengers arriving in Penang illustrate the global allure of the destination. Leading the list are Singapore, India, and Indonesia, reflecting the increasing interest in cruise holidays among Asian countries. This is complemented by travelers from the Philippines, China, the United States, South Korea, Thailand, Australia, and other non-Commonwealth countries, highlighting Penang’s international appeal across continents. As Penang anticipates an even higher influx of cruise tourists in 2024, its position in the global cruise tourism industry remains robust.
