GEORGE TOWN, July 3 — The WOU International STEM Innovation Competition, organized by Wawasan Open University, witnessed a record 866 local and international team entries. Participants vied for the prestigious Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards across four categories: Junior Innovator, Young Innovator, Tertiary Innovator, and Professional Innovator. The final round, held at WOU’s main campus and virtually, saw five Junior Innovator and five Young Innovator finalists, alongside 11 teams from higher learning institutions and professional innovators, competing for top honors.
In the Junior Innovator category, 12-year-old Jared Tan Jun Hao from Penang triumphed with his Terra Guard disaster alert system, winning the Diamond Award. The Young Innovator Diamond Award went to a team from SMK Damansara Jaya, Selangor, for their AI Trashzilla prototype. Meanwhile, the Tertiary Innovator Diamond Award was claimed by a team from SMJK Heng Ee, Penang, for their biodegradable seedling cultivation project. In the Professional Innovator category, Ezrul Helmi Bin Muhamad Razali’s Multifunctional Card project won the Diamond Award. The competition highlighted the exceptional talent and creativity of young innovators in Malaysia and beyond, reinforcing the significance of STEM education and innovation.
