PUTRAJAYA, November 7 – Malaysia will use electric vehicles (EVs) as the official cars for ASEAN leaders during its chairmanship next year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced. The move aligns with Malaysia’s commitment to sustainability, aiming to showcase its dedication to energy transition at international events. “If we are serious about sustainability, let us demonstrate it in Malaysia,” Anwar stated, noting that all vehicles for heads of government, ministers, and officials will be EVs.
This decision was shared at an energy forum jointly organized by the Ministry of Higher Education and Petronas, where Anwar emphasized Malaysia’s ambition to become an ASEAN hub for sustainable growth. As part of this shift, Malaysia is also adopting a more strategic approach to foreign investments, focusing on projects that promote technology transfer, AI, and local skill development.
Anwar also highlighted Malaysia’s proactive stance in foreign policy, noting that projects like the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) will now prioritize local resources and talent, symbolizing Malaysia’s assertive yet diplomatic approach in its international relations.
