GEORGE TOWN, November 19 – Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh has urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to conduct a thorough investigation following the recent disclosure of videos allegedly showing several state assembly persons discussing bribes. The videos reportedly depict a businessman talking with assembly members about returning funds given in support of a state government project, which was later rescinded. Ramkarpal emphasized that these allegations are serious and warrant a full investigation to uphold public trust.

The MP also called for the MACC to extend whistleblower protection under the Whistleblower Act 2010 to the individual who provided the videos, citing the whistleblower’s fear of retaliation. “Such protection should be granted provided the complaint is not frivolous, which does not appear to be the case here,” he stated. Ramkarpal noted that immunity could only be revoked under specific conditions at the discretion of the MACC.

Ramkarpal added that protecting whistleblowers is essential to combating corruption, as the Act’s objective is to encourage disclosures of misconduct in both public and private sectors. “If fear of repercussions persists, it discourages others from coming forward. MACC must ensure that the whistleblower is protected, fostering confidence in our anti-corruption measures,” he concluded.
