KUALA LUMPUR, November 19 — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof announced that Malaysia is exploring nuclear power as a clean energy option to support the country’s growing electricity needs. The Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA) is conducting a thorough feasibility study to examine the potential of nuclear power, particularly Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), as a stable, low-emission solution for industries, data centers, and electric vehicles.

Through this study, MyPOWER Corporation will assess safety, regulatory standards, and stakeholder considerations to provide recommendations for Malaysia’s future energy mix. While Malaysia has no set target for nuclear’s role, the study aims to determine its suitability as part of a diversified energy portfolio, especially as the country phases out coal-fired power.

Fadillah emphasized that any move towards nuclear power will be carefully planned, with a focus on site safety, cost efficiency, and environmental impact. Additionally, Malaysia’s established expertise in nuclear technology, including partnerships with international agencies like the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), positions it to build a skilled workforce and responsibly implement nuclear energy if the government decides to move forward.
