KUALA LUMPUR, November 21 – Malaysia is set to begin the transition to Euro 5 petrol by September 2025, with full implementation expected by 2027, as part of a long-term solution to improve the nation’s air quality. The announcement was made by Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, during the National Motor Vehicle Operation launch in conjunction with World Ozone Day in Shah Alam.
The shift to Euro 5 petrol aligns with the Environmental Quality Regulations (Control of Petrol and Diesel Fuel Content) 2007 and is aimed at reducing air pollution. Nik Nazmi emphasized that this transition would not only improve air quality but also push the automotive industry to upgrade its vehicle technologies, including for commercial and heavy-duty vehicles. The implementation of Euro 5 fuel is expected to result in more efficient vehicle performance and cleaner exhaust emissions.
This move follows Malaysia’s earlier introduction of Euro 5 diesel in April 2021, which achieved full specification by April 2023. The government is committed to working closely with industry stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition to Euro 5 petrol, contributing to the nation’s ongoing efforts to combat air pollution and promote environmental sustainability.
