KUALA LUMPUR, November 26 – Malaysia’s QR code immigration clearance system, first introduced for motorcyclists and bus travellers between Malaysia and Singapore, will soon be expanded to other modes of transport. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution announced that the trial phase has effectively reduced congestion during peak hours, with the QR code system speeding up processing times significantly compared to the traditional M-bike system.
The system, known as MyRentas, has already demonstrated success, cutting bus passengers’ waiting times from 120 minutes to just 15 minutes during trials at the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) and Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB). Saifuddin revealed that the full implementation is targeted for next year to support Malaysia’s chairmanship of ASEAN and the “Visit Malaysia Year” campaign. With annual traffic at the Johor Causeway projected to reach 150 million travellers, the initiative aims to enhance border efficiency, particularly given Singapore’s status as Malaysia’s top ASEAN tourist source.
