KUALA LUMPUR, November 30 – The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) has addressed claims by Rimbawatch regarding Malaysia’s delegation to the COP29 climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan. Responding to allegations of a heavy fossil fuel industry presence among Malaysia’s 151 delegates, NRES clarified that companies like PETRONAS and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) participated through their sustainability divisions and are pivotal to the nation’s Net Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and net-zero ambitions by 2050.
On concerns regarding Indigenous and Sabah-Sarawak civil society organizations’ (CSOs) participation, NRES explained that delegate badges were allocated based on Malaysia Pavilion priorities and negotiating themes. The ministry emphasized its inclusive approach to climate negotiations, involving public, private, and civil society stakeholders, and assured continuous process improvements for COP30 in Brazil.
