SEPANG, November 27 – Transport Minister Anthony Loke has welcomed the proposal to impose additional conditions for elderly drivers renewing their licences, following concerns about the rising number of road accidents involving senior citizens. However, he emphasized that further study is needed to ensure a balanced approach that considers both public safety and the potential impact on the elderly.

“The proposal is well received, but it needs thorough study before any decision is made. We are cautious not to impose measures that may have negative implications,” Loke told reporters, highlighting the need for a careful evaluation of the benefits and drawbacks of such conditions.

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) echoed the sentiment, stating that no changes to licence renewal processes for senior citizens aged 65 and above have been implemented yet. While discussions are ongoing at the policy level, senior citizens can currently renew their licences without additional competency or health assessments.

This follows a report suggesting such measures could help reduce accidents involving elderly drivers.
