GEORGE TOWN, December 8 – The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) has expressed grave concerns about a development project in Tanjung Bungah near the Waterfront Condo, citing environmental and wildlife threats caused by land clearing. Large trees, decades in the making, have been uprooted, displacing dusky leaf monkeys from their natural habitat.
Damages to water pipes and sewage systems have also been reported, amplifying the disruption to the area. CAP warns that clear-cutting practices destroy habitats, disrupt the water cycle, and exacerbate climate change, with severe consequences for vulnerable species and local ecosystems. CAP is urging the State Government and local authorities to enforce stricter environmental regulations and integrate wildlife considerations into development planning.
Without adequate frameworks to evaluate and mitigate the ecological harm, CAP fears ongoing projects will leave irreversible damage to the environment and its inhabitants. The association calls for sustainable development practices that prioritize habitat preservation and ecosystem balance, ensuring progress does not come at the cost of nature’s delicate equilibrium.
