KUALA LUMPUR, January 3 — Bukit Bendera MP Syerleena Abdul Rashid has called for urgent regulatory reforms to safeguard children from the growing threats of digital predation and harmful online content. She highlighted the alarming findings of “Op Pedo,” an integrated operation by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), which exposed the rising dangers children face on social media platforms, gaming communities, and even educational apps.

Syerleena stressed the need for social media companies to be held accountable through strict regulations requiring active prevention of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and prioritisation of user safety. This aligns with the government’s plan to introduce a licensing framework for social media platforms starting January 2025, as outlined by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil. “Protecting children is a moral imperative that demands immediate and decisive action,” Syerleena stated, urging Malaysians to report suspicious activities while advocating for collective vigilance.
