CYBERJAYA, December 27 — Telegram and WeChat are in the process of obtaining official licenses to operate in Malaysia, according to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). Commending the platforms’ commitment to compliance, MCMC stated both are expected to meet the necessary requirements soon under the licensing framework that takes effect on January 1, 2025.
The new rules aim to enhance online safety, particularly for vulnerable groups like children, while improving user experience and protection against harmful content. MCMC urged all eligible platforms to submit their licensing applications by December 31, 2024, warning of potential regulatory action for non-compliance. The commission remains ready to assist service providers to ensure a smooth transition.
