BUKIT MERTAJAM, December 31 — A man has been arrested in connection with the assault of a restaurant worker in Machang Bubok, following the circulation of a viral video on social media. According to Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) police chief ACP Helmi Aris, the incident occurred at 2:45 am on December 27, and the arrest was made after a report was lodged.
The altercation stemmed from a personal misunderstanding and is not linked to any racial issues, Helmi clarified. The suspect allegedly punched the victim in the face and struck his head with a dustbin lid. Investigations are ongoing under Sections 324 and 506 of the Penal Code. Helmi also urged the public to refrain from speculation that could threaten public safety after netizens criticized bystanders in the viral 1-minute and 36-second video for failing to intervene.
