PUTRAJAYA, January 9 — Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook has called on the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to take a more proactive stance in addressing the surge in road accidents involving heavy vehicles. Following the tragic Ayer Keroh crash that claimed seven lives, Loke emphasized the need for intensified enforcement and stricter monitoring of drivers and operators who flout regulations.

“Accidents involving heavy vehicles have increased, with devastating consequences. JPJ must ensure drivers adhere to time limits and that vehicles are properly maintained,” Loke said at an event at Galeria PJH. He also highlighted the importance of public awareness campaigns to educate road users on safety measures, noting that every life saved is a step toward a safer future.

Between January 2019 and December 2024, 1,457 deaths were recorded in lorry-related crashes, with 548 bus-related cases contributing to 153 fatalities.
