KUALA LUMPUR, January 8 — Malaysia and Singapore have formalized an agreement to develop the Johor Special Economic Zone (SEZ), a strategic initiative to boost investments and streamline the movement of goods and people between the two nations. The agreement, unveiled during Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s visit to Malaysia, aims to attract high-value investments in manufacturing, logistics, tourism, and energy transition sectors.
Economic Minister Rafizi Ramli highlighted that the SEZ is targeting 50 projects within its first five years, with the potential to create 20,000 skilled jobs. Malaysia will establish an infrastructure fund to support companies within the SEZ, while Singapore will provide its own investment facilitation fund for Singaporean businesses in Johor. Prime Ministers Anwar Ibrahim and Lawrence Wong emphasized the collaboration as a rare and significant initiative to enhance competitiveness and drive regional economic growth.
The SEZ initiative also addresses daily congestion on the Johor-Singapore causeway by fostering greater economic integration and facilitating cross-border employment. Both leaders underscored the long-term vision of the project, which has been crafted with input from key stakeholders to ensure sustainable growth and mutual benefits for both nations.
