KUALA LUMPUR, January 11 – Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli today outlined an ambitious vision for Malaysia to develop its own chips and graphics processing units (GPUs) within the next five to ten years. Speaking at the Forum Ekonomi Malaysia (FEM) 2025, Rafizi emphasized the potential for Malaysia to move beyond the back-end of semiconductor manufacturing and establish a high-value industry that caters to both domestic and global demands.

Rafizi also highlighted Malaysia’s aspiration to become a global data center powerhouse, leveraging its renewable energy (RE) resources to drive this growth. He noted that the government is finalizing its fifth large-scale solar (LSS5) bidding round, with plans for an LSS6 initiative to further accelerate RE capacity development. “We are focused on scaling renewable energy capacities faster than ever before, to support industries like AI and data centers,” he added.

The minister’s long-term vision aims to position Malaysia as a leader in advanced technology sectors, creating economic opportunities and fostering innovation to establish a global footprint in the AI-driven economy.
