LANGKAWI, January 18 — The ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat, chaired by Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad Haji Hasan, is taking place today in Langkawi, Kedah. This marks the first high-level meeting under Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship for 2025, held under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability.”

Foreign Ministers from ASEAN Member States, along with Timor-Leste as an ASEAN Observer and representatives from Myanmar, are participating in the discussions, supported by the ASEAN Secretary-General. Malaysia is set to present its Chairmanship priorities focusing on political-security, economic, and socio-cultural pillars to enhance regional integration and sustainability.

Key topics on the agenda include ASEAN’s strategic direction, follow-ups from the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits in 2024, and pressing regional issues such as the Myanmar crisis and geopolitical tensions. The retreat also provides an avenue for bilateral discussions among member nations to strengthen ASEAN unity and bilateral ties.
