KUALA LUMPUR, January 20 — Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced that the implementation of Malaysia’s 5G network will prioritize over 67 industrial zones to maximize its economic benefits. Speaking at a Chinese New Year contribution programme in Taman Seri Sentosa, he highlighted the importance of leveraging 5G technology for industrial areas, enabling Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and factories to adopt advanced technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data.
“Our focus is not solely on achieving 100 per cent 5G coverage but ensuring that key sectors with the most to gain from high-speed and secure internet, such as industrial zones, can fully utilize it,” Fahmi said. He added that the Digital Economy and Fourth Industrial Revolution Council (MED4IR), chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, will further discuss 5G network plans in its February 12 meeting.
Fahmi also noted Malaysia’s rapid progress in 5G adoption, with coverage in populated areas reaching 82.4 per cent by December 2024 and penetration among the population climbing to 53.35 per cent, up from 10.8 per cent in October 2023. At the same event, he reminded the public to remain vigilant against scammers during festive seasons, urging caution when dealing with suspicious calls and emphasizing the importance of reporting incidents through the 997 hotline.
