KUALA LUMPUR, February 1  – A new study by Kyndryl and Microsoft reveals that while 83% of Malaysian organizations acknowledge the importance of technology in achieving sustainability goals, only 35% fully leverage it in their strategies. The Global Sustainability Barometer study highlights that although 77% of Malaysian organizations see alignment between IT and sustainability teams, IT’s role often remains limited to reducing its own environmental impact.

Regulatory compliance emerged as the primary driver for sustainability efforts in the country, underscoring the need for stronger leadership alignment and data-driven strategies. The study also found that while 92% of organizations collect sustainability data, only 20% utilize it effectively to optimize performance. Additionally, 60% of businesses employ AI to enhance efficiency and reduce environmental impact, but 68% do not consider AI’s own footprint.

Effendi Azmi Hashim, Country Managing Director of Kyndryl Malaysia and Indonesia, emphasized the importance of integrating technology into sustainability plans, stating, “Organizations must move from intent to collective action by embedding data and AI into their strategies to achieve meaningful change.”
