During Apple’s latest investor call, CEO Tim Cook addressed the arrival of Chinese AI firm DeepSeek and its impact on the industry. Responding to a question from analyst Ben Reitzes, Cook acknowledged the innovation behind DeepSeek’s cost-efficient AI models, particularly its V3 model, which powers the R1 reasoning system competing with ChatGPT.

He emphasized that advancements reducing the cost of AI training and operations are beneficial to the industry, aligning with Apple’s strategy of integrating AI seamlessly across its silicon and software ecosystem. Cook reiterated Apple’s commitment to a hybrid approach, leveraging both on-device processing and private cloud infrastructure.

This strategy, he noted, allows Apple to maintain efficiency while managing capital expenditures prudently. With Apple Intelligence integrating OpenAI’s ChatGPT, the company benefits from the decreasing cost of AI development without the need for excessive investment. While this shift eases immediate pressure, Cook made it clear that Apple will continue advancing its AI capabilities to stay at the forefront of innovation.
