KUALA LUMPUR, February 4 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim assured the public that the upcoming electricity tariff increase under the Imbalance Cost Pass-Through (ICPT) mechanism will not be burdensome. Addressing confusion surrounding the 14 per cent hike, Anwar clarified that the adjustment is part of a six-month review and will not lead to significant price increases that disadvantage the community.
He added that the increase is necessary to align prices with market capacity and that minor taxes on companies would help fund vital sectors like education, healthcare, and infrastructure. Anwar emphasized that the tariff changes, set for implementation on July 1, 2025, would not be overwhelming and joked that users could afford to pay a little more if they made a small profit.
“Small, small, don’t worry,” he said during his address at the Chinese New Year celebration with the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCIM).
