GEORGE TOWN, February 18 – The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) has warned that Malaysia faces significant challenges this year, including inflation, food shortages, and climate change impacts. With 70% of the nation’s food imported, CAP urges the government to address supply chain inefficiencies and tackle cartel activities to curb rising costs. Additionally, unpredictable weather patterns threaten agriculture and water resources, prompting calls for improved drainage systems and rainwater harvesting initiatives.
Despite these challenges, CAP highlights opportunities in green energy adoption and economic resilience. Policies like Net Energy Metering (NEM 3.0) and EV incentives could accelerate Malaysia’s shift toward sustainability, though concerns over EV battery recycling and household debt remain. CAP stresses the need for strategic interventions, including Rent-to-Own housing and better public transport, to ensure a more stable and sustainable future.
