KUALA LUMPUR, March 1  – The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) has warned against the use of dummy buckles as seatbelt alarm stoppers, highlighting their potential to compromise safety features in vehicles. These accessories can disable seatbelt alerts and affect the proper deployment of airbags, increasing the risk of fatalities in accidents.

Despite awareness campaigns since 2020, dummy buckles remain widely available due to the lack of legislation prohibiting their sale. The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) has renewed its call for the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living to impose an immediate ban on these dangerous products, including their sale online.
