GEORGE TOWN, February 17 – The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) celebrated its 20th anniversary with an impressive rescue demonstration by its Special Action and Rescue Team (STAR Team) at Persiaran Karpal Singh. Thousands of spectators witnessed an intense 30-minute operation, simulating a pirate attack on a merchant vessel.

The display showcased elite fast-roping techniques, pyrotechnic explosions, and strategic maneuvers, culminating in a fly-past by AS365 N3 and AW139 helicopters. The demonstration highlighted Maritim Malaysia’s commitment to maritime security and rapid response capabilities.

The event, themed “Two Decades of Maritim Malaysia, The Nation’s Ocean Shield,” was attended by Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, and Maritime Director-General Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah.

It featured a fleet inspection of 13 maritime vessels, as well as AW139 and Dauphine aircraft. The Maritime Empowerment Carnival (KMP), held over three days, included safety exhibitions, interactive activities, and a special performance by rock icon Datuk Awie, attracting enthusiastic participation from the public. In recognition of excellence, Maritim Negeri Sabah and Labuan received the Best Maritime State Award, while KM Tun Fatimah was named Best Maritime Ship.

A newly introduced Maritime Malaysia Special Award was also presented to former Maritime Director-Generals for their contributions to the agency’s development. The anniversary celebration underscored Maritim Malaysia’s dedication to national security and its ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s maritime defense capabilities.
