KUALA LUMPUR, February 25 – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is engaging with TikTok to clarify the blocking of 18 local media organisations, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced. According to initial reports from TikTok, the accounts were restricted due to coverage of a molestation case at a mosque in Batang Kali.
Fahmi highlighted concerns over TikTok’s AI moderation system, which may have misclassified news content. He emphasized the need for discussions with TikTok to ensure media organisations receive differentiated status to prevent similar restrictions in the future. Bernama CEO Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin also urged MCMC to expedite the restoration of affected media accounts, stressing that the reports in question were standard news coverage.
