According to Tenable Cloud Research, organisations worldwide, including in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, are facing heightened security threats in their Kubernetes environments. The 2024 Tenable Cloud Risk Report reveals that 78% of organisations have publicly accessible Kubernetes API servers, significantly increasing the risk of cyberattacks.
Additionally, 44% of organisations run privileged containers, and 58% have overprivileged cluster-admin roles, making them vulnerable to breaches, data theft, and service disruptions. Ari Eitan, Research Director at Tenable, warned that misconfigurations in Kubernetes environments can lead to catastrophic security incidents.
To mitigate risks, Tenable recommends limiting API exposure, reducing privileged container use, enforcing strict Role-Based Access Control (RBAC), and conducting regular security audits. As Kubernetes adoption grows, organisations must prioritise security strategies to protect their cloud infrastructure from evolving threats.
