KUALA LUMPUR, March 16 – Malaysia’s ongoing crackdown on illegal e-waste imports is a critical step in protecting the nation from becoming a global dumping ground, as seen in the surge of illicit recycling operations run by criminal syndicates. These operations exploit low-cost labor, evade pollution controls, and illegally dispose of toxic waste, leading to severe environmental and health consequences.

Despite criticism, the Malaysian government is upholding its international obligations under the Basel Convention by enforcing stricter controls, ensuring hazardous waste is not improperly dumped in the country. With new 2025 regulations strengthening global waste trade oversight, Malaysia’s firm stance is necessary to prevent irreversible damage to public health and the environment.
