KUALA LUMPUR, March 20 – Concerns have been raised over the swift passage of the Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) Bill in Dewan Rakyat, despite critical issues highlighted by opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) and environmental groups. Critics argue that the bill lacks adequate safeguards against long-term environmental and social risks, including liability concerns and potential carbon leakage.
The government’s urgency to position Malaysia as a regional carbon disposal hub has led to transparency concerns, especially regarding agreements with foreign corporations. Additionally, relying on industry-led “prudent CCUS practices” raises doubts about independent oversight and environmental protection.
With the bill now set for debate in Dewan Negara, stakeholders urge a reassessment to ensure regulatory coherence and stronger safeguards before implementation.
