KUALA LUMPUR, March 21 – Malaysia must ratify and sign at least eight key protocols set by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) before it can consider generating electricity using nuclear energy, said Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) Chang Lih Kang.

While Malaysia has already signed several agreements, including those on nuclear safeguards and emergency response, it has yet to ratify crucial treaties such as the Vienna Convention on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage. The government, through MOSTI and the Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB), is working to expedite the Atomic Energy Licensing Amendment Bill 2025 to meet these requirements.

Chang clarified that Malaysia is still in the exploratory stage of nuclear energy adoption, ensuring all necessary conditions and expertise are in place before making a decision.
