KUALA LUMPUR, March 24 – Sony has announced the development of an advanced display system featuring a high-density RGB LED backlight with independent colour control for red (R), green (G), and blue (B). This technology enhances colour purity, expands the colour gamut, and delivers superior brightness for both film production and home entertainment.
Sony’s proprietary backlight control technology ensures seamless colour gradation and accurate brightness representation across large screens, making the system ideal for professional content creators and consumers seeking a high-end viewing experience. With over 99% coverage of the DCI-P3 colour space and approximately 90% of the ITU-R BT.2020 standard, the new system surpasses conventional LED backlights in delivering wider dynamic range, higher peak brightness, and more natural colour reproduction.
Sony is collaborating with MediaTek, ROHM Co., Ltd., and Sanan Optoelectronics Co., Ltd. to develop cutting-edge processing and LED drive technologies. Mass production is set to begin in 2025, marking a significant milestone in Sony’s ongoing commitment to revolutionizing display technology for both professional and consumer markets.
