GEORGE TOWN, March 28 – The Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) has received approval from Lembaga Lebuhraya Malaysia (LLM) to proceed with a major infrastructure project under the state’s 4th Water Contingency Plan 2030 (WCP 2030).

The RM128 million initiative involves the construction of a 13.0km-long, 1.8m-wide treated water pipeline from the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant to Butterworth, marking one of the longest pipelines laid in Penang since PBAPP’s corporatization in 1999. This project will enhance the supply of treated water to Penang Island, benefiting 165,054 registered consumers, including households and multinational corporations in Bayan Lepas.

PBAPP is working closely with federal, state, and local authorities to fast-track approvals, ensuring timely project completion by 2030. With support from the Penang State Government, discussions are ongoing with agencies such as the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS), the Public Works Department (JKR), and the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) to finalize the pipeline’s alignment and address land acquisition needs.

PBAPP CEO Dato’ Ir. Pathmanathan K. expressed appreciation for LLM’s support, emphasizing the project’s importance in securing Penang’s long-term water supply. Construction is set to begin in 2026, with a focus on minimizing disruptions to key highways such as the Butterworth Outer Ring Road (BORR) and the North-South Expressway (NSE).
