KUALA LUMPUR, April 6 – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is set to complete its survey by the third quarter of 2025 to determine whether the number of X (formerly Twitter) users in Malaysia exceeds eight million. According to Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching, the survey aims to verify X’s claim that it does not meet the user threshold required to obtain an Applications Service Provider Class Licence (ASP ©).

She also highlighted ongoing engagements with Meta and Google, both of which have yet to obtain the necessary licence. Teo reiterated that while there is no fixed deadline for compliance, service providers could face hefty fines or imprisonment if they fail to adhere to regulatory requirements. Additionally, the government is pressing Meta to implement stricter advertising verification measures, similar to those in Singapore, to curb online scams and illicit content.
