GEORGE TOWN, March 29 – The Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) has announced that the only scheduled major water supply interruption (SWSI) for 2025 will take place from 25 to 28 April, affecting 341,708 consumers across five districts. The interruption is necessary to facilitate 23 critical waterworks projects in nine installations, with a key focus on finalizing the RM8.7 million Sungai Perai River-Crossing Pipeline (SP-RCP) and upgrading infrastructure at the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant (WTP).

This initiative aims to enhance the efficiency of water distribution, benefiting approximately 66% of PBAPP’s customer base. The Sungai Dua WTP, Penang’s largest and most vital water treatment plant, will undergo seven crucial upgrades, including pipeline repairs and the replacement of a butterfly valve on a major pipeline. Due to the temporary partial shutdown of this plant, the planned water supply recovery process will be implemented in three stages, with 100% restoration expected within 60 hours.

PBAPP has strategically scheduled the SWSI over a weekend to minimize disruptions to weekday economic activities. Key industrial zones, including Bayan Lepas and Batu Kawan, as well as Penang International Airport, are projected to regain water supply within 24 to 48 hours. DATO’ IR. Pathmanathan K., CEO of PBAPP, expressed regret over the inconvenience but emphasized the necessity of these works to ensure long-term improvements in water supply services.

He assured the public that every effort would be made to restore water as efficiently as possible, with special attention given to higher-ground and end-of-line areas that may experience extended delays.
