GEORGE TOWN, APRIL 18 – Penang’s water authority, PBAPP, has officially approved 23 key water works projects set to commence simultaneously on 25 April 2025 in Seberang Perai and Penang Island. Among the major undertakings are final connection works for the Sungai Perai River Crossing Pipeline, essential repairs and upgrades at the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant (WTP), as well as infrastructure upgrades at the Bukit Dumbar and Batu Uban facilities.

These projects are expected to significantly boost the capacity and pressure of treated water distribution across Penang. The Scheduled Water Supply Interruption (SWSI), beginning at 10.00pm on 25 April 2025, will affect a total of 341,708 consumers. The interruptions are divided into three categories based on location: 24-hour, 48-hour, and 60-hour durations, impacting households, factories, and critical facilities such as the airport.

Consumers are strongly advised to store adequate water in advance to manage the temporary disruption. PBAPP CEO Dato’ Ir. Pathmanathan K. assured the public that all preparatory inspections have been completed, and the groundwork is set for safe and efficient implementation. The projects, aligned with the recent commissioning of the new 114 MLD Package 12A module at the Sungai Dua WTP, are poised to benefit over 465,000 consumers by improving the overall reliability and capacity of Penang’s water supply system.
