KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 — Santan, the food and beverage arm of Capital A, has announced a major eco-conscious move by transitioning from single-use plastics to compostable Polylactic Acid (PLA) packaging across its inflight dining services. Developed with Rightway New Material, the new PLA-based items—sourced from corn and cassava—are now used for cups, lids, and cutlery, with paper cups certified for home composting.
This initiative, already underway in Malaysia and Thailand, is expected to significantly cut carbon emissions and set new sustainability benchmarks in the airline industry. Santan CEO Catherine Goh highlighted that the move not only enhances environmental responsibility but also aims to inspire systemic change within aviation.
With an estimated annual carbon emissions reduction of 500 tonnes, the initiative combines PLA packaging with AI-driven food resource management to reduce waste and boost efficiency. “We see every flight as a chance to make a difference,” Goh said, reinforcing Santan’s commitment to delivering value with purpose.
