KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 – As the world commemorates World Press Freedom Day, Malaysia celebrates a landmark step forward with the recent passing of the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) Bill—50 years after it was first proposed. The Bill promises to uphold ethical journalism, protect press freedom, and offer a progressive, industry-led alternative to restrictive media laws, signifying a new era for Malaysia’s media landscape.

However, the celebration comes at a time when artificial intelligence is reshaping the very foundation of journalism. With AI tools increasingly embedded in newsrooms, Malaysia faces a delicate balance: harnessing the benefits of AI for efficiency and accuracy, while mitigating risks like misinformation, job displacement, and algorithmic bias.

As AI becomes a dominant force in content creation and moderation, the MMC must now take the lead in establishing ethical frameworks that ensure technological advancement supports—not undermines—press freedom.
