GEORGE TOWN, May 6 – Tourism Malaysia intensified its national tourism revival efforts through the 11th instalment of its industry engagement sessions, held today at Iconic Marjorie Hotel, Bayan Lepas, Penang, in preparation for Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VMY2026). The session aimed to synchronize promotional strategies and foster cross-sector collaboration to ensure robust participation from tourism stakeholders.

Officiated by YBhg. Dato’ Yeoh Soon Hin, Deputy Chairman of Tourism Malaysia, the session was attended by Penang State EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy YB Wong Hon Wai, along with senior government representatives, airline operators, hoteliers, and local tourism entrepreneurs. Emphasizing the theme “Malaysia: A Sustainable and Culturally Rich Destination,” Dato’ Yeoh highlighted Penang’s unique appeal through its cultural diversity, heritage status, and growing eco-tourism potential.

YB Wong Hon Wai underscored Penang’s strong post-pandemic tourism rebound, citing data that surpasses pre-pandemic benchmarks. Notably, Penang recorded over 426,000 visitors to Bukit Bendera in Q1 2025 and now hosts 320 weekly international flights—up 54% compared to a decade ago. Additionally, two of its prime areas—Batu Ferringhi and George Town—rank among the nation’s top five in hotel occupancy rates, affirming Penang’s national and global tourism prominence.

Penang’s readiness for VMY2026 is further backed by new attractions such as Gurney Bay, Entopia by Night, and the Penang History Gallery, alongside major infrastructure projects like the Penang Waterfront Convention Centre and airport upgrades. With strong government and industry collaboration, Penang is poised to play a key role in positioning Malaysia as a leading sustainable and competitive global tourism destination.
