KUALA LUMPUR, May 6 — The United States has expressed concern over the protection of its sensitive technology during ongoing tariff negotiations with Malaysia, revealed Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz today. He said Washington’s primary aim is to ensure US-origin technologies, particularly semiconductors, do not end up in the hands of restricted parties or countries.
During a press conference after a special parliamentary session, Tengku Zafrul stated that American officials want clear assurances that Malaysia will not serve as a transshipment hub for sensitive tech, especially chips. He added that the US is also urging Malaysia to increase its investments in sectors where America sees the need for greater international participation, noting Malaysia’s already significant investments in US bonds and equities.
Tengku Zafrul stressed that Malaysia is working toward achieving zero tariffs—or, at the very least, a meaningful reduction—from the current 24 per cent imposed on Malaysian exports to the US. He reassured that Malaysia will maintain a firm yet factual approach in negotiations, asserting, “We won’t cave in to pressure and we welcome all suggestions.”
While pursuing a balanced trade policy, Tengku Zafrul also affirmed that Malaysia continues to strengthen ties with other global partners, particularly China, highlighting the importance of diversifying economic alliances amid evolving geopolitical dynamics.
