KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 — A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck northern Sumatra at 4.57pm today, with tremors felt across Penang and other parts of Malaysia’s west coast. The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) confirmed that the quake, which originated 89km deep, poses no tsunami threat to Malaysia but has prompted precautionary monitoring.
Penang residents reported feeling the tremors, with the Fire and Rescue Department confirming two calls from Jelutong and George Town. Authorities found no structural damage, and buildings were declared safe. The incident reignited memories of the devastating 2004 tsunami, which claimed over 50 lives in Malaysia and highlighted the region’s vulnerability to seismic events in the Andaman Sea.
