MOSCOW, May 16 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim raised the long-standing issue of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 during his bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin, urging accountability following the latest International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) findings that held Russia responsible for the 2014 tragedy.
Anwar, speaking on behalf of the Malaysian people and families of the 298 victims, emphasised the importance of justice and highlighted the ICAO report’s conclusion that the aircraft was downed by a Russian missile while flying over conflict-ridden eastern Ukraine. President Putin expressed his condolences and reiterated Russia’s willingness to cooperate with an impartial investigation.
While denying claims of non-cooperation. Anwar noted that Putin insisted on a thorough and depoliticised inquiry, stressing Russia’s reservations towards entities deemed biased. Anwar pledged to convey the Russian leader’s feedback to the victims’ families, reinforcing Malaysia’s commitment to seek justice and closure in one of aviation’s most tragic incidents.
