KAZAN, May 19 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim revealed that ASEAN nations are actively revisiting the idea of forming a regional monetary fund to strengthen financial resilience and reduce reliance on external currencies.

Speaking during an interview with TV BRICS, Anwar emphasized that initiatives like the Chiang Mai Initiative and rising use of local currencies in trade with Thailand, Indonesia, and China reflect ASEAN’s growing commitment to regional financial independence.

Anwar highlighted that Malaysia will host key ASEAN meetings later this month and year-end summits with partners including the GCC, China, and East Asian economies. These platforms, he noted, mark a renewed focus on economic fundamentals and multilateral cooperation.

As a BRICS partner, Malaysia supports ASEAN’s efforts to safeguard regional interests and promote a more balanced global financial system.
